8 Steps for September Enrollment at the US University/College

PREPARING

Visit Student Resource Center

Attend program on U.S. admissions process

Seek accurate information and advice about study in the United States at the Student Resource Center

Decide whether you should study in the United States by evaluating such items as:

- Your English language proficiency
- Your academic qualifications
- Your financial resources

FIRST STEP
(August/September)

Select appropriate U.S. colleges/universities on basis of anticipated level of study, program desired,
costs, admissions requirements, other personal preferences.

Check test requirements of selected institutions: TOEFL, SAT, Achievement Tests, ACT, etc.

Note test dates and closing date for registration (very important!).

Inquiry letter/request for application material:

Complete letter/request and mail to no more than 10-12 colleges/universities.

Enclose photostat of school record.

If needed (only if you cannot meet financial costs from personal funds), request information and an application form for financial aid.

Send all materials via airmail. Keep copies of all material sent.

Keep a record of date mailed and name of institutions.

Continue research: Read college/university catalog, check general reference materials in SRC.

SECOND STEP
(September/October )

Take required (specifically requested) admissions tests such as TOEFL, SAT, or ACT.

THIRD STEP
(November/December)

Complete formal application(s) received from U.S. institution(s).

Choose about 4 -5 colleges/universities and complete special application for foreign applicants.

Note application deadlines (e.g., January 15, February 1).All required application materials have to reach the respective U.S. college/university before the designated application deadline (deadline noted on the application form and/or in college catalog).

Application fee: If required (range of fees between $10-$50), fee should be paid by bank draft, payable in U.S. dollars only, and generally to the name of the college/university.

Submission of final application form to the U.S institutions: Generally, prospective applicants are required to submit most or all of the following:
l. Completed formal application form;
2. Official school transcript;
3. Certified copies of all secondary and postsecondary public exam results;
4. Completed financial statement;
5. Medical history, if requested;
6. Official copies (sent by ETS) of U.S. admissions test scores;
7. Financial aid application form if applicant is in need of financial assistance/loan;
8. Letters of recommendation from secondary school headmaster and/or teachers (to be sent
directly to U.S. college/.university by headmaster/teacher); and
9. Application fee, if required

Remember to check application deadlines for mailing.

FOURTH STEP
(January/February )

If you have not received an acknowledgement of receipt of above application materials, write to the
college/university to ask for confirmation of receipt of completed application.

FIFTH STEP (February/June )

Period for receipt of acceptance and/or rejection letters. Upon receipt of acceptance letter: Note deadline for your reply. If two or more acceptance letters are received, choose the institution you wish to attend. Write to the person at that college/university who sent you the notification of acceptance letter and inform him or her of your plans to enroll. Request that Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility) be sent to you as soon as possible. (Form I-20 is required to apply for your U.S. visa.)

Write to the colleges/universities that offered admission and notify them that you will be enrolling at another institution in September. (This is very important, as other students on a waiting list will then become eligible for admission.)

SIXTH STEP (June)

Apply for passport.

Begin non-immigrant student visa application procedures as soon as you receive your Form I-20 (Consular Section, U.S. Embassy).

After student visa has been issued, make travel arrangements with an airline or reputable travel agency that regularly arranges travel to the United States.

SEVENTH STEP (July)

Participate in the predeparture orientation program sponsored by the SRC.

Discuss Home stay/Host Family programs.

Obtain information regarding arrival in the United States. (Your admitting institution should notify you of arrival/travel/lodging, etc.)

EIGHTH STEP (Late August/Early September)

Plan to arrive at U.S. college/university at least one full week before studies begin.

Follow arrival instructions received earlier from your college/university.

HAPPY STUDYING!
